Panasonic TC-P55VT50 Review - 55-inch Plasma HDTV

My tc p55vt50 arrived a bit over 2 weeks ago we believe that I'm now familiar enough about it to write down an evaluation. This review is good for the 55" model.

The tc p55vt50 replaced my 50" G-Series Panasonic plasma from 2010. Because i liked it merely fine, that it was one small bit too small, stood a bezel that got uglier as time passes, and been inflicted by floating blacks, which has been very annoying since my primary utilisation of the display is watching Blu-Ray content in the dark. I had been anxiously awaiting the discharge with the tc p55vt50 - it's, that we ordered one without seeing it first, reasoning to myself that when I did not like it, then I wouldn't be happy with any TV in 2010.

The tc p55vt50 arrived. Once unpacked and hang up, I marveled at those great tv before I even turned it on. Was this TV really made by Panasonic, the firm known for being helplessly behind the competition is relation to its industrial design? The svelte single sheet of glass design is beautiful. The tc p55vt50 takes the structure introduced with last year's clunky VT30 and trims it to perfection. The bezel is really a lot smaller compared to Samsung's E7/8000 plus more attractive in my personal. Fantastic nice silver trim across the edges and a classy stand having a silver/black gradient. I noticed what sort of silver edge may well be a problem in an exceptionally bright room, however i love it.

But design is secondary, isn't it? Picture is the reason anyone buys a flagship model and also the tc p55vt50 greater than delivers. Panasonic has made major improvements over 2011 models, that has a new driving method, redesigned panel, and improved filter. Once initial set-up is conducted, the TV defaults to straightforward mode, which looks awful - dull and lifeless with egregious line bleed. Thankfully there's a fairly easy fix - vid THX certified display, and new for 2012 Panasonic includes two separate THX modes for 2D viewing - THX Cinema and THX Bright Room. These modes look really good as it is. THX Cinema 's what I mainly watch with, although I sometimes use Bright Room mode, albeit with contrast scaled to 80. When compared to the THX mode on my last Panasonic, the mode here is much improved and lacks the greenish push i always noticed before. I'm sure in lieu of aim to eyeball it, since I'm not really a calibrator, I am going to leave it in THX mode sans any adjustment and pay anyone to calibrate it later this holiday season. Compressed satellite HD actually looks surprisingly great, image processing is top notch here and it's good at masking artifacts from less-than-stellar feeds. Definitely superior to my old Panny. The photo has also a characteristic which is hard to describe - perhaps "smoother" is the word I'm in search of here; truly looks incredibly natural and effortless in subtle color transitions and gradients. I assume that could be produced by Panasonic's claim of improved shades of gradation.

The real test, however, was whenever i put off the lights and fired up the Blu-Ray player. The home menu on my own Sony Blu-Ray player is often a light gray, which can be best for testing panels for flaws in uniformity. Knowing troubles with banding, blobbing, and splotching Panasonic had with last year's model, I nervously inspected every part from the panel. No anomalies can be found, whew. I pressed play and appeared sampling several different content, plus the VT muscled through everthing with incredible prowess. The black level here's impressive - Possess seen a VT30 in the dark which rightfully trounces it. I've also seen an E8000 in the dark but it can't get as dark since the VT. Letterbox bars blend to the bezel. Due to the deep, dark blacks the tc p55vt50 is blessed with incredible contrast. Images offer an abundance of pop and lifelike depth, and remember the tangible realism created by later-generation Pioneer plasma panels. Motion is natural, cinematic, and artifact-free if your 4:4 pulldown 96Hz mode is engaged. I would not notice any flicker either. It must even be noted i always have watched enough upon it to substantiate that this image is rock-solid - no floating blacks, fluctuating brightness, no distractions. A beautifully rendered, film-like image that pulls you in.

3D performance: Using THX Cinema 3D mode, the 3D image looks great. This is the first 3D TV I've owned but I've seen a good amount of 3D on other flat panels but some projectors. 96Hz is unavailable here. Great experience of depth and minimal crosstalk, although I really do notice some in higher contrast scenes. This really is somewhat remedied by switching from 60 to 48Hz mode, however it introduces some annoying flicker. I tested using Blu-Ray content like Ultimate Wave Tahiti 3D, Hugo, Tron:Legacy, Arabia 3D, as well as the Adventures of Tintin 3D. 2D>3D conversion remains unimpressive, despite if making 3D adjustments, on the other hand suppose it's not it is a shame thinking about the display does the conversion instantly. I'm assuming it functions by absorbing ambient light from above and below the panel and rejecting it, resulting in a darkened image from above or below. The horizontal viewing angle is not really compromised, therefore i certainly don't believe it's worth getting a point away, especially given that neither I nor anybody I realize watches TV sitting underneath the screen or standing above it.

All told, the tc p55vt50 is, basically, the most effective plasma Panasonic has ever produced, to represent higher than a minor improvement above the VT30. Panasonic has set the bar don't just for their own reasons, but leaves Samsung in the dust this season. While Panasonic focused entirely on drastically improving image quality this current year, Samsung seems content with making minor improvements while adding a camera and frustratingly stupid gesture control for their plasmas.
