The Yaz Resource Center, a patient advocacy group, is alerting women who are taking or have taken the birth control drugs Yaz and Yasmin that the medications have been linked to blood clot-related injuries, and lawyers are in the process of settling cases for those affected.

Recently, Bayer Pharmaceuticals gave an indication of which types of cases it would agree to settle and what the average amount would be.

According to a federal Multi-District Litigation court in Illinois set up to handle the cases, nearly 12,000 people have filed a Yaz lawsuit. The formal case is known as Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2100).

Thousands of women filed injury claims after studies in Europe and the United States linked the popular birth control drugs to blood clots, which can cause stroke, Deep Vein Thrombosis, and Pulmonary Embolism. Yaz lawsuit

In 2009, The British Medical Journal published studies from Denmark and the Netherlands linking the chemicals in Yaz to blood clots. In October, 2011 the FDA also released data of more than 825,000 women taking oral contraceptives which showed drugs like Yaz could cause up to a 74% increased risk of developing blood clots.

Bloomberg News originally reported on April 13, 2012 that Bayer would settle 500 of the lawsuits at approximately $ 220,000 per case. The company has now reported in its Stockholders Newsletter for the first quarter that it has paid $ 142 million in settlements, at an average of about $ 218,000 a case. click here

The report added, Bayer is only settling claims in the U.S. for venous clot injuries after a case specific analysis of medical records.

The Yaz Resource Center cautions that with so many cases, only certain lawyers may be able to obtain settlement of a victims Yaz lawsuit. Further, a lawyer will have to submit the proper medical records and paperwork in order to facilitate a settlement. The Resource Center only recommends certain lawyers who are already settling Yaz lawsuits.
