If we are talking about the condition called trigeminal neuralgia , we are talking about a neuropathic condition. It is not a condition that can be missed by the person who has it, unlike other illnesses which can exist in their body without them knowing about it. The intensity of the pain that will be suffered by the patient will be more than enough indication that there is something really wrong. However, detecting the development of this disease from its early stages is not as easy or swift. It will then become difficult to ignore once the pain starts to manifest itself because it could reach excruciating levels.

There are other names that the condition known as Trigeminal neuralgia go by. One name that it goes by is 'tic doulourex'. There is also the name prosopalgia. It is also known in some circles as Fothergill's disease. It is manifested on the trigeminal nerve, which is where the name for the condition is derived from. The use of the prefix 'tri' indicates that this condition has something that can be associated with the number three. The tri in this case refers to the ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular branches of the trigeminal nerve. If one or two of the branches become affected, Trigeminal neuralgia arises. The same is true when all three branches become affected. The part of the body where these nerves are found, and where the pain is felt, is the face. Aside from the eye and ear regions, even the nose region and the jawline feel the pain. The forehead, too, is often affected.

Statistics show that Trigeminal neuralgia occurs in women more than they do in men. Both men and women can get this condition; it certainly does not choose specific genders. However, women tend to get it more than the males.

Another risk factor for this condition is the age of the person afflicted with it. The progression of this condition might have started at a very early age, but the manifestation (the pain) only occurs once they go beyond the age of 50. That does not mean, however, that younger people are completely safe from the condition known as Trigeminal neuralgia. There have been cases where kids below 5 years of age were found to have Trigeminal neuralgia. However, it is still an undeniable fact that older people, especially those who are more than 50 years old, experience the painful symptoms of Trigeminal neuralgia.

When you treat Trigeminal neuralgia, you have to know that it entails a number of things. The first thing that would have to be addressed is making the excruciating pain under our control. It would also involve putting neuropathy back on the right track, even if it something very difficult to do. You would be able to correct neuropathy more successfully if diagnosis has been made early and it has been immediately treated right after diagnosis. In many cases, treatment of Trigeminal neuralgia is done by way of administering medications and drugs. Surgery is also another option, especially if the patient prefers a treatment that provides more lasting relief.
