Nothing in life hurts like depression does. Those at sufferance of depression - true depression - have no hope and no will to live. You're so alone; and the world is so dark. Meaning and mattering are nowhere to be found.

Unfortunately, it in no way has to be this way. Depression is not a disease. You don't catch depression the way you catch the common cold. Also it is not genetic. Certainly there are not any depression genes.

Most people would like you to think you have simply no decision whether or not you end up depressed. They want you to think you are an innocent victim. You must've been at the wrong place at the exact wrong time. Someone who had depression coughed on you, therefore you got depression from them.

But it doesn't work like that. You must do certain things to end up depressed. You must take specific actions. You must live your life in a specific way. When you do these things, you'll most likely end up depressed.

So what causes people to get depressed? When you shut off your own authentic, genuine emotions and will not really feel your true feelings. That's it. Depression is the thing that occurs when you refuse to feel. Oh, you're feeling something, all right. But usually it will not be the genuine, true emotion.

I understand how ridiculous this appears to be. Plus I am sure most dismiss this truth without spending some time to examine it closely. It cannot be so easy to understand, they will say.

Many people believe depression is a result of an imbalance of norepinephrine and serotonin within the brain. Your brain chemicals get out of whack, and you get depressed. If you only look at the little picture, then the statement is true. But the bigger question, however, is exactly why do a person's brain chemicals get out of balance?

Could it really be chance, or bad luck, or bad genetics? Once again, I'd suggest it's a result of turning off your emotions. Your brain chemicals are only a mechanism. It is similar to stating the reason cars come to a halt at the traffic light is because the driver places her foot on the brake. The braking system certainly is the mechanism, of course.

But why do autos really stop at the red light? Because it's the right thing to do. It keeps them out of harm's way. Autos stop at red lights merely because that's what the driver intends to happen.

And so am I indicating someone who's depressed intended to get that way? Certainly not. What they intend equates to not feeling their own emotions. However, at a certain stage of no feeling, you drop off a cliff. This is when real depression occurs: it can kick in overnight, without any warning.

The objective was just to close down the feelings. The result, if the shutting down is significant enough, lands up with the person being depressed. Depression results from the unintended outcome of attempting to not feel your personal true feelings openly and fully.

If you are depressed, it is certainly not your wrong doing. You are just doing what contemporary society teaches you to do: Namely, to not let in your true feelings. Almost everywhere you turn, you're given the message that emotions don't matter. Everyone blocks their feelings to one degree or another. Some, however, take it to the extreme.

The solution is to get started feeling something - anything at all. Even the feelings of despair, if you feel them genuinely, will lift you up somewhat. Even feelings of hopelessness are an improvement over feeling nothing. The critical factor is to open your true heart and let in your true feelings as much as you are able to. Your heart will absorb and then release the terrible pain like a sponge sopping up liquid and then being squeezed out. If only you will let it.
